Before and After
I’ve been so excited to share this before and after post. It really is a gem and a total transformation, and worth getting out there so everyone can see the possibilities. One of those (dare-I-say) shocking renovations where the pictures really speak for themselves.
We started working with a great couple who were trying to figure out a way to renovate their bungalow, in a subdivision south of Lansdowne Street here in Peterborough, where all the homes trend towards the “aught’s” in all their side-split glory. The kitchen was closed-in, separate from the living space, with light only entering from the kitchen window. Needless to say, it needed a major overhaul.

So, here we have a couple images of the original oak cabinets. Again, the space isn’t completely wrong. What you don’t see is the wall separating the kitchen (where the camera is shooting from) and the living area / where the island is now. But, all-in-all, this gives you a general idea of where we were able to take it.
One of these days I’m going to dig into the “why’s” of the kitchen layout throughout the decades. There is something about the social and historical implications of these kitchens we replace that needs some introspection – why do families trend toward open concept now? Is there a lack of drawer space because of limited slide hardware options or could a single cabinet just hold that much more Tupperware and jello moulds? What is with the renaissance of the butler’s pantry in this day-and-age?

But time is short and we have this gorgeous remodel to work through. So, onward.
The Final Product
The layout of the kitchen didn’t change drastically. Walls were removed and an island (in Pavilion Grey by Benjamin Moore) is centred where they once stood. This allows for some seating space where there was no room to put a kitchen table.
We installed shaker-style white cabinets in Oxford White by Benjamin Moore. Champagne bronze hardware, with backplates on the knobs add a bit of luxe we can’t get enough of.
Function
As for how it functions: We installed a modern day Lazy Susan (with six pull out drawers and six baskets) to give some added functionality and avoid a blind corner. The fridge cabinet above the old refrigerator was the same depth as one of the uppers, so unless you had a ladder, you couldn’t access anything, it was too far back. Now the cabinet is plumb to the pantry beside it, and the refrigerator meshes perfectly into the space.
We included a build-in garbage pull-out, added some deeper drawers for pots and pans (the basic functionality that those older kitchens tended to miss) and then let the new kitchen speak for itself. With the added storage in the island cabinetry, nothing is lost in terms of integrity, and everything is gained in light and openness.
One thing to note about this kitchen is that it was all on a tight budget. We stuck to basic add-ons, like the Lazy Susan and garbage pullout, and put in a laminate countertop until they’re ready to splurge on stone. The bones are solid, they can move upwards when they are ready.
I can’t help but add a little quote from our customer. He called us after his renovation was just completed:
“I keep showing all my coworkers….I honestly can’t believe we have this quality of a kitchen. They can’t either”.
There are so many options – sometimes spaces just need a little professional help. Don’t give up on them yet. Like we said, a custom kitchen is as versatile as we make it. Options are endless in terms of where you want to go, and can be carved to suit your budget.
Thanks to our South-end customers for letting us take some shots – enjoy your new space. It’s beautiful.
